This guide is designed for licensed MDs, DOs, NPs, PAs, and RDs who want practical guidance—not theory.

One of the biggest myths in functional medicine is that insurance and root-cause medicine can't coexist.

If you're an MD, DO, NP, PA, or RD interested in practicing functional medicine, you've probably heard some version of these statements:

  • "Insurance won't cover functional medicine."
  • "Insurance is terrible to work with."
  • "The administrative burden isn't worth it."
  • "You'll never have enough time to practice real functional medicine."
  • "If you want to build a successful functional medicine practice, you have to go completely cash-pay."

I heard those things too.

And for a while, I believed them.

After years of building my own insurance-based functional medicine practice, I've realized these ideas all come down to three common beliefs that keep great providers from building the practice they really want.

I created this guide because it's exactly what I wish someone had handed me when I started.

When I first started researching how to accept insurance, I expected to find courses, mentors, and practical resources.

Instead, I found page after page of functional medicine websites with the same FAQ:

"Do you accept insurance?"

"Unfortunately, no."

The more I searched, the more I realized there were almost no resources showing providers how to appropriately incorporate insurance into a functional medicine practice.

And honestly, I don't think it's because it can't be done.

I think it's because most of us were never taught how.

We simply believed all the myths without researching further.

Medical school, nurse practitioner programs, physician assistant programs, and dietetics programs teach us how to diagnose and care for patients.

They don't teach us billing.

They don't teach us coding.

They don't teach us insurance documentation.

And they certainly don't teach us how to combine those skills with a root-cause approach to medicine that has become extremely in demand.

So I spent years figuring it out through trial and error, denied claims, phone calls with insurance companies, and refining systems that actually worked.

I'm sharing everything I've learned so hopefully you don't have to spend years figuring it out on your own.

"Can I use my insurance?"

In my experience, this is one of the first questions patients ask.

"Can I use my insurance?"

"Will my insurance cover my labs?"

"Can I submit this to my insurance?"

Patients are already paying hundreds—or usually thousands—of dollars every month for health insurance.

They don't want to choose between getting the care they need and paying their bills.

They want functional medicine.

They also want to use the insurance they're already paying for.

I believe we can help them do both.

Because the truth is...

Functional medicine doesn't have a demand problem—it has an access problem.

Patients are looking for this care.

They're simply looking for a way to afford it.

"But doesn't insurance mean 15-minute appointments?"

This is probably the biggest concern I hear from other practitioners.

And it's a fair question.

Many of us came from traditional healthcare where 15-minute appointments were the norm. That's not why we fell in love with functional medicine.

Here's what I've learned:

Accepting insurance doesn't mean you have to practice medicine the way the traditional healthcare system has always done it.

With the right practice model, appropriate documentation, ethical and accurate billing, and intentional workflows, it's possible to spend meaningful time with patients while still operating within an insurance-based practice.

In my own practice, new patient visits are approximately 60 minutes, and follow-up visits are around 40 minutes. Today, I care for around 15 patients each week and earn more than I did working full-time as a traditional NP. More importantly, I traded a two-hour daily commute, packed schedules, and rushed appointments for a practice that allows me to spend meaningful time with my patients—and be more present for my family.

The goal isn't to squeeze functional medicine into a 15-minute appointment.

The goal is to build a practice where you can provide thoughtful, root-cause care while remaining financially profitable and sustainable.

"Don't you have to be cash-pay to be profitable?"

There are many successful cash-pay practices.

But there's something people don't talk about enough.

When you're first starting out, a cash-pay practice can sometimes feel less like practicing medicine...

...and more like working in sales.

You're constantly wondering:
  • How am I going to convince this patient to spend thousands of dollars on my program when I am just a stranger they found on social media?
  • Do they trust me enough to book?
  • Will enough people book this month?
  • How much revenue will I actually bring in?
  • Can I comfortably pay myself?
  • What if nobody schedules this week?

Instead of focusing on becoming a better clinician, you can find yourself spending more time marketing than practicing medicine.

One of the biggest things I've learned is this:

The biggest obstacle isn't finding patients who want functional medicine.

It's finding patients who can afford to pay entirely out of pocket.

When patients can use the insurance they're already paying for, one of the biggest barriers to saying "yes" disappears.

That doesn't just expand access for patients.

It can also create a practice with steadier patient demand, more predictable revenue, and less month-to-month uncertainty.

Insurance doesn't just make functional medicine more accessible.

It can also help make your practice more sustainable.

Imagine This...

Imagine opening your schedule and seeing patients booked weeks in advance - not because you're constantly trying to convince people to spend thousands of dollars out of pocket, but because you've removed one of the biggest barriers to care.

Imagine knowing what next month will likely look like financially.

Imagine spending less time feeling like a salesperson and more time being the clinician you worked so hard to become.

Imagine seeing fewer patients while providing deeper, more meaningful care.

Imagine patients thanking you because they were looking for a provider like you for years.

That's exactly why I created this guide.

Let's Build the Future of Functional Medicine Together

Functional medicine shouldn't be a luxury.

Patients deserve access to root-cause care.

Providers deserve fulfilling, profitable careers without burnout.

I believe we can build both.

If that vision resonates with you, I'd love to help you build a practice that makes it possible.
